Does a change of Calendar year really matter?

Does a change of Calendar year really matter?

Every 1st January, we are so excited, some of us continue to party, others spend leisurely time at home, love sleeping until late, many follow a ritual to visit holy places to pray, while few wake up early to rush to go catch that first sunrise of the year!

But do the things that really matter, understand this changing of one year to another? Does the weather, economy, employment, pollution, pandemic, health etcetera really know how to differentiate between say, a 31st December and 1st January? Well, the answer is NO. All these phenomena remain just the same from one day, one month to another. Still, we like to see the change of a year as a big event and find our own little ways of rejoicing it.

The question is, Why do we?

The so-called change of date we celebrate year on year, is not even fixed in the universal time machine. Did you know, it keeps getting shifted a day here or there based on a leap or a non-leap year. And so, not even a single 1st January actually falls after one exact full cycle of earth in Sun’s orbit, it arrives either early in non-leap years or bit late during the leap years.

Quite dull, isn’t it? We can possibly picture a person, who lacks interest in the small pleasures of life, saying all of this. The above scientific explanation can be seen as a departure from the romanticism and fun of life. And most of us do want to celebrate the change of year within our means and not look at it only rationally, which is obviously boring.

So, while the key matters stated above do not understand any change of year or date, but we surely do. And how we think and act can directly or indirectly impact all of those.

This change of a year is nothing but a much needed “pit-stop” for us to look back at the last 12 months that just ended. To reflect and cherish what we enjoyed, to be thankful for the happiness, and to learn from our mistakes and be wary of things which didn’t go very right.

And that’s how an Industrialist choosing ways to reduce its carbon footprint this year, can impact the weather, an Entrepreneur investing in an innovative start-up this year can lift the economy, a Business owner kick starting a new project can bring up employment, a professional choosing to shun her diesel guzzler SUV can significantly reduce pollution levels, a healthcare worker with her services can continue to help eradicate the grave impact of a pandemic like Covid, an Aam aadmi, taking a resolve to run 2 KMs a day this year can rejuvenate their immunity and also inspire many people to staying healthy and fit.

And that’s why, this “pit-stop” of a New Year truly does matter.

Because without it, you would continue to run the errands of life, not stopping anywhere to reflect and think, to energising and refuelling your hearts and souls towards building a meaningful life for yourself and others.

Make each day count, take stock of things you did, start what you were avoiding for long, cherish those who added to your happiness and keep them along, shrug off things and people who made your journey difficult. Create a beautiful, inspiring vision for the New year and live it with the best of your ability 👍

Wishing you a smooth ride into 2021!
